A WPC wall panel is a profile made from wood-plastic composite: wood flour or fibre dispersed in a thermoplastic such as polyethylene, polypropylene or PVC, plus additives, then extruded into a shape. Interior WPC panels are usually fluted or flat decorative boards; exterior grades are cladding boards, often co-extruded with a protective polymer cap.
Key takeaways
- WPC is a family, not one recipe: the polymer type, wood content and additives decide how a panel behaves.
- Compared with MDF and solid wood, WPC tolerates moisture far better, but it moves with temperature and needs expansion gaps.
- Interior WPC panels and exterior WPC cladding are different products; do not use an interior profile outdoors.
- Co-extruded (capped) boards wrap the core in a polymer shell that improves colour retention and moisture resistance.
- Ask for the polymer base, fire classification and test reports for the exact profile you are buying.

What is WPC made of?
Wood-plastic composite combines a wood element with a thermoplastic that can be melted and shaped. The US Forest Products Laboratory describes the most common type as a composite where the plastic forms the continuous matrix and the wood acts as reinforcement or filler, with wood content typically below 60% by weight. It lists polypropylene, polystyrene, vinyls and low- and high-density polyethylenes as the thermoplastics used, chosen because they melt or soften below the temperature at which wood starts to degrade (USDA Forest Products Laboratory, Wood Handbook, Chapter 11).
A typical formulation has three groups of ingredients:
- Wood element. Usually wood flour (fine, powder-like particles) or short wood fibre. Other plant fibres such as bamboo or rice hull are also used.
- Polymer. Polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) are common in exterior decking and cladding. Many interior decorative panels use a foamed PVC-based compound, often with mineral fillers. Always ask which polymer a “WPC” panel actually uses.
- Additives. Coupling agents that bond wood to plastic, lubricants for extrusion, pigments, UV stabilisers and, in fire-retardant grades, flame retardants. The FPL handbook lists UV stabilisers, impact modifiers, flame retardants, coupling agents and lubricants among the additives used.

How are WPC panels made?
Production is usually a two-step process: compounding, where dried wood flour is dispersed into molten plastic with the additives, and forming, most often by profile extrusion through a die that gives the panel its cross-section. The FPL handbook notes that moisture disrupts thermoplastic processing, so wood must be pre-dried or vented equipment used, and that melt temperatures are generally kept below about 200 °C (392 °F). After extrusion the profile is cooled, cut to length and either left with its extruded surface, embossed with a grain, sanded, or wrapped with a decorative film.
What is co-extrusion?
Co-extrusion runs two materials through the die at once: the WPC core and a thin polymer cap that encapsulates it. US Forest Service researchers found that a clear plastic cap layer gave better moisture resistance than uncapped WPC controls, while a high-density polyethylene cap gave some resistance to colour change (Stark & Matuana, USDA Forest Service, 2007). In later work, co-extruded boards with a stabilised cap showed no visible fading after up to 3,000 hours of accelerated weathering, because the cap blocked most UV radiation (Jin, Stark & Matuana, 2013). The same researchers also reported that a cap did not prevent changes in mechanical properties after weathering, so a cap improves surface durability rather than making the board immune to the elements.
WPC vs PVC vs MDF vs solid wood: how do they compare?
The table compares typical interior wall panel materials in general terms. Individual products vary widely, so treat it as a starting point and check data sheets for the specific board.
| Property | WPC | PVC (foamed or solid) | MDF (painted, veneered or foiled) | Solid wood |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Main ingredients | Wood flour plus PE, PP or PVC and additives | PVC compound, often with fillers | Wood fibre bonded with resin | Sawn timber |
| Moisture tolerance | Good; core absorbs some water at exposed ends unless capped | Very good | Poor unless moisture-resistant grade; swells at cut edges | Moves with humidity; needs a finish |
| Main movement driver | Temperature | Temperature | Humidity | Humidity, mostly across the grain |
| Typical finishes | Embossed, film-wrapped, co-extruded colour | Printed film, foil, high-gloss laminate | Paint, veneer, laminate | Oil, lacquer, stain |
| Repairability | Replace the profile; film finishes cannot be sanded | Replace the panel | Fill and repaint; veneer can be lightly sanded | Sand and refinish |
| Installation | Clips or screws on battens, or adhesive; expansion gaps needed | Clips, adhesive or trims | Adhesive and pins, or screws | Secret nailing or clips; acclimatise first |
| Best interior uses | Feature walls, retail, hospitality, humid rooms | Bathrooms, splash zones, budget fit-outs | Dry rooms needing a painted or veneered finish | Premium projects where natural timber is specified |
| Outdoor use | Only exterior-grade cladding profiles | Exterior-grade products only | No | Yes, with durable species and correct detailing |

What are the pros and cons of WPC wall panels?
Advantages
- Moisture tolerance. The polymer matrix protects most of the wood from water, which makes WPC suitable for kitchens, bathrooms outside direct spray zones, and commercial spaces cleaned with damp mops.
- Low maintenance. No painting or oiling; a damp cloth cleans most surfaces.
- Consistent profiles. Extrusion produces the same flute geometry along every length, which suits long runs and repeat retail roll-outs.
- Fast installation. Interlocking profiles and clip systems go up quickly on battens.
- Recycled content potential. Formulations can use recycled plastics and wood residues; ask for documentation if this matters for your project.
Disadvantages
- Thermal movement. Plastics expand and contract with temperature more than wood does with the seasons indoors. Panels near south-facing glazing, heaters or under-floor heating need generous gaps at ends and trims.
- Finish is set at the factory. Film-wrapped and co-extruded surfaces cannot be sanded or refinished like timber.
- Not all grades are fire-rated. Standard WPC is a combustible material. Fire-retardant grades exist, but the classification belongs to a specific tested product and build.
- Quality varies. Wood content, polymer type, filler levels and wall thickness all vary between factories, so two panels with the same cross-section can perform very differently.
Interior vs exterior WPC: what is the difference?
Interior WPC wall panels are designed for stable indoor conditions. Many are hollow-core profiles with a decorative film or embossed surface, and they rely on the room’s temperature range staying moderate. Exterior WPC cladding has to cope with UV, rain, freeze-thaw cycles and surface temperatures well above air temperature in sun. It typically uses a denser profile, UV-stabilised compound and, in better grades, a co-extruded cap.
In Europe and the UK, WPC cladding profiles and tiles have their own product standard, BS EN 15534-5, which covers cladding for external or internal use, while test methods for WPC compounds and products sit in BS EN 15534-1. When you compare suppliers, ask which tests from the series have been carried out on the profile you are buying.
Exterior cladding also brings building regulation questions, particularly in the UK. Read is composite cladding fire safe? before specifying it on any building in England.

What should buyers ask a WPC supplier?
- Polymer base. PE, PP or PVC, and is it virgin or recycled?
- Construction. Hollow or solid core, wall thickness, and whether the surface is film-wrapped, embossed or co-extruded.
- Intended use. Interior only, or exterior-rated with UV stabilisation?
- Fire classification. Euroclass to EN 13501-1 or ASTM E84 rating, with the report for the actual profile and mounting. Our explainer on EN 13501 and ASTM E84 fire ratings explains how to read them.
- Movement data and installation guide. Required expansion gaps, clip spacing and batten centres.
- Sampling and inspection. Approve physical samples of colour and profile, and agree tolerances before production.

FAQ
Is WPC the same as PVC?
No. WPC contains wood flour or fibre in a plastic matrix, which may be PE, PP or PVC. PVC panels contain no wood. Some interior “WPC” panels are PVC-based compounds with wood flour, so ask for the formulation.
Is WPC waterproof?
It is highly water-resistant, not waterproof in every sense. Uncapped boards can absorb some moisture at cut ends and exposed wood particles. Co-extruded boards resist moisture better because the core is sealed in a polymer cap.
Can interior WPC panels be used outside?
No. Use an exterior-grade cladding profile designed for UV, rain and wider temperature swings, installed on a ventilated batten system.
Can WPC panels be painted?
Most are supplied pre-finished and are not designed to be painted. If you need a paintable fluted wall, a primed MDF fluted panel is usually the better choice for dry interiors.
